When you’re interviewing sales staff, your first concern is probably not about their driving ability. You’re gauging knowledge, personality and motivation. While these are significant factors for success, it’s also important to know their driving history due to liability reasons.

Any employee who operates a vehicle as part of their job requirement opens a business up to possible lawsuits and/or fines. There are a variety of prior driving circumstances that can affect future business liability such as:

  • Expired driver’s license
  • Driving under the influence (DUI) convictions
  • Other serious moving violations, including hit and run and excessive speeding

Pre-employment screening can help mitigate business risk by preventing negligent hiring claims, damaging public relations and soaring litigation costs. At Signet Screening, we recommend two types of screening:

Motor Vehicles Records search

Through motor vehicle checks, you can identify job candidates with unsafe driving records. Your team will know if a potential employee has a clean record or a history of violations and suspensions. In some states, a motor vehicle report – not criminal records – is the method to access DUI convictions.

“The motor vehicle report is really your first line of defense if a negligent hiring claim is filed regarding an employee who drives for company business,” says Signet Screening President Matt Messersmith. “We understand that you don’t want screening information to hold up hiring decisions, so we obtain driving histories efficiently and accurately.”

Drug screening

Drug screening is another important measure to help make more informed hiring decisions. There are several drug screening methods – urine, hair or saliva – depending on your business needs.

Typically, Signet Screening recommends a 10-panel urine test as the preferred screening method. Our team can perform tests without the traditional Chain of Custody forms, except when it is required for the Department of Transportation (DOT). We allow you to manage your pre-employment, random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, DOT testing and return to duty testing, all within our system.
