As the opioid epidemic continues to devastate communities, the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) new drug testing parameters took effect January 1, 2018.

The updated guidelines – with new drug screening requirements – affect the transportation and shipping industries along with companies participating in the Ohio Drug-Free Safety Program worker’s compensation premium discount plan.

What are the new DOT guidelines?

To combat the growing abuse of opioids, DOT’s testing regime covers not only codeine, heroin and morphine but also now includes:

  • Oxycodone
  • Oxymorphone
  • Hydrocodone
  • Hydromorphone

The Department of Transportation (DOT) added drug screening requirements in January 2018

Note: Employers in the Ohio Drug-Free Safety Program can opt to adopt stricter standards depending on their business requirements.

Signet Screening strategic partner, Karl R. Ulrich, Esq., of Sebaly Shillito + Dyer, recommends notifying employees of updated drug screening policies. “While DOT doesn’t specifically require an employer provide written notice concerning the new policy, it’s probably considered a best practice to keep your employees informed.”
